We all know that uric acid is not good for our health. It causes gout which is a very uncomfortable health condition that would leave it's victim suffering in pain. Gout results from very high uric acid level in the body. Uric acid results from the breakdown of purine in the body. The excess of purine in the body results to the over production of uric acid or the inability of the kidneys to eliminate uric acid. Symptoms of gout include a sudden onset of a swollen, red, painful and hot joint. Usually it starts at the base of the foot's big toe but the other joints in the body can also be affected.
Since high uric acid results from the kind of diet we have, it is necessary that we avoid foods which are rich in it in order to help our condition. It is advisable to limit your beer and alcohol intake or eliminate it at all. Aside from alcoholic beverages, according to the American Medical Association, foods which are high in purine are internal organ meats like liver, kidneys, heart, etc.; legumes, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms, sardines, herring, anchovies, yeast and many more.
Eating the above foods as well as other foods high in uric acid in moderation will also decrease the uric acid level of the body. We should always remember that everything should be taken in moderation as different foods have different health benefits to the body, however, when there is an excess of some group of foods in the body, it also results to other health diseases. Moderation is always the key. It is also necessary to drink a lot of water in order to flush out uric acid from the body.
