Common Problems of Today's Teenagers

April 17th 2011 14:50
When a child becomes a teenager, he or she is so excited about a lot of things. This is the stage where a lot of experimentation takes place. Teenagers want to try new things. They have a very strong will that they can do everything that they want to do and can be successful in doing it. They are usually aggressive at this stage and won’t listen to any advice that would stop them from doing what they want to do.

Society also has a lot of expectations from them. The people around them expect them to act according to what is always right and accepted by society. However, part of their curious teenage nature is to try different things which getting wrong can never be avoided. Their parents also expect them to do good in school, to be good and obedient children, to come home early and be with the family every dinner time and on special occasions. This becomes in conflict with their relationship with their friends in school and off-school. The activities they do with friends would sometimes be in conflict with school activities or even family events. They then become torn between their friends and their family. At this stage, having friends who are loyal to you is very important. Having no friends in school would be very hard. You will feel so alone and left out. This results to peer pressure. This is where the problems come in.

The pressure that society gives teenagers which starts from adolescent stage becomes a big problem to most of them. Some of these result to eating disorders. My sister experienced this when she was at this stage and me and my family supported her along the way. An adolescent eating disorder treatment can be successfully done with the help of the whole family. We should always put ourselves in their shoes and give them our utmost understanding so they could easily overcome this problem.

Some teenagers who have nowhere to turn to mostly resort to drugs and alcohol. They feel that they are all alone and drugs and alcohol could keep them company. However, youth drug abuse as well as alcohol abuse can also be prevented. Those who are drug users and alcoholics should get the help they need most. The family has a very important role here. It is the family’s responsibility to be always there and guide the teenager all throughout until the end of the crazy, difficult, stressful stage of his or her young adult life.
