Arthritis is a condition of the body which is characterized by pain and swelling and stiffness of the joints. It literally means the inflammation of the joints.
The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis usually occurs in people over 40 while the latter may strike at any age and usually affects women more often than men.
Osteoarthritis which is also called degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis is usually cause by trauma. It can also be caused by a joint infection, or due to generic factor. As a person ages, the risk of getting osteoarthritis increases.
Wisegeek.com states that rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes joint inflammation and damage together with anemia. It is more common in women as well as to cigarette smokers. Some rheumatoid arthritis cases may show advanced complications like inflammation may be felt under the skin. It may also occur in the lungs and the protective sac that surrounds the heart called the pericardium.
